Welcome!

Welcome as our family begins our journey to improve how sustainably we live. We’re a family of 4 plus 2 cats, 6 chickens, and a handful of fish. I would say that we are fairly mainstream, although we likely have less waste than many people (partially thanks to our trusty compost bin!). I don’t think that we do a good job with energy or water conservation, so I’m looking forward to finding ways to improve those areas.

Why sustainability? And why now?

As we hear more and more about a wide variety of issues including climate change leading to more catastrophic weather events, plastics in the ocean, water scarcity, contaminated recycling being rejected by China, and environmental injustice, just to name a few, it seemed time to find ways to make it personal. Additionally, our almost 5-year old, W, is becoming more and more aware of environmental issues. The other day he asked why we don’t just always leave our cars running, so I explained about how that uses gasoline and creates carbon dioxide which is released into the atmosphere and contributes to global warming. He caught on right away and said “Oh no, then we wouldn’t have snow in the winter!”.

W is very aware of things going on around him and is especially interested in keeping animals safe. He is big into picking up trash so that pollution doesn’t harm any creatures, understands recycling, and is starting to learn about energy and water conservation. Through this project I hope that he learns and understands more about how to be a good steward of our environment and that we set the stage for his baby brother, T, to learn as well.

Thanks for joining us! I’m looking forward to sharing what we learn and hearing your questions and suggestions!
